Teensy by rdnewman Teensy by rdnewman
Teensy meters for unobtrusive, always-on-top system monitoring.   Preview above shows how to read the meters.   Each meter is independent and can be placed where ever one likes (I usually park them in the upper left corner).  Use Rainmeter skin manager to mark them to be topmost (no layout is included in the 10KB(!) .rmskin file).

I used an app like this on my mobile phone and it's great having a quick place to check without it being in the way.  The default version in this .rmskin is just 1px height per bar and 50 px wide (for CPU - two of the other meters are 1/3 longer).  It's easy to change the bar height, widths, and colors if this is a bit too teensy for you.  See skin information in Rainmeter manager for more details.

If you think of some other measure that could benefit from a teensy treatment, so say in the comments.

I am also finding that the 8-Core option does not work.

Thanks for letting me know.  I'll see if I can't find an 8 core to test against.  Is it that it doesn't work at all, or doesn't working correctly (for instance, some cores do and others don't)?

If I wanted to add some text to each bar, just as a quick identifier, how would I do that?

Well, you could just edit the rainmaker files to add the text (normal rainmaker programming), but then you'd have to use a font large enough to read which probably means each bar would have to be at 6px if not larger (and so then begins to be less unobtrusive).  The design was intended to just take up a tiny portion of your screen so that they're never in your way, but still give you sense of what load your system is under.

However, I can play with adding easier options for text display if you really want to go there.   The cores might not matter so much I imagine but is it the other bars that you're most thinking about?

You can expand them.  ;)   For a laptop, it was nice to have 1px, but on my desktop, I expanded to 2px.
